000 schools from around the UK, from the Isle of Man to the Channel Islands, have been competing since March in the regional heats of the 2010 Times Spelling Bee. Having battled against some extremely stiff competition, 100 schools have secured their place in the semi final stage of the competition. The semi finals took place in Cineworld cinemas across the country from Monday 17 May. From the 100 competing teams, 10 winning schools will travel to London to compete in the Grand Final at The Institute of Education on 24 June.
The aim of the championship is to make spelling fun, help teachers raise the profile of spelling and develop the talents of their students.
In 2009 more than 750 middle and secondary schools from across the UK took part.
After the excitement of the local heats and semi finals, 10 schools remained to take part in the glittering Grand Final in London’s West End. The nail- biting event resulted in St Martin’s School from London being crowned winners and they consequently received celebrity status of their own after they appeared on the front page of The Times. Describing the day as ‘the best time of our lives’ the team also appeared in numerous national television and radio interviews the following day.

Blumenthal collaborates with TVU H
eston Blumenthal, famous for his innovative style of cooking and ownership of the three-Michelin starred restaurant The Fat Duck, created an elaborate dinner supported by Hospitality and Tourism students from Thames Valley University (TVU) in West London at Pillars restaurant last month. Heston Blumenthal and his team of chefs from The Fat Duck including Executive Chef Ashley Palmer-Watts worked with TVU students, offering advice and helping them to prepare the evening’s meal following two days of workshops in Heston’s unique cooking style. ‘Meat Fruits’ was a highlight of the night for guests and it will be served at Heston’s new restaurant that is opening at The Mandarin Oriental in London later this year.
William Curley, who became the youngest ever Head Patissier at The Savoy Hotel and was awarded the Best British Chocolatier accolade for 2007, 2008 and 2009 by the Academy of Chocolate, assisted students as they prepared the dessert.
The oversubscribed event, set in the understated and cool interior of TVU’s Pillars restaurant, welcomed 85 guests to enjoy a dining experience to remember. All profits from the meal and raffle will go the charity ‘Chefs Adopt a School’ which endorses the government’s policy on healthy eating by educating children and young people about food, nutrition, hygiene, and health. Prizes at the raffle included champagne, wine and flowers.
Celebrity Chef Heston Blumenthal said: “It’s been fantastic to work with TVU students who are full of excitement, energy and enthusiasm. The facilities here are excellent and TVU has the perfect balance of teaching the traditional foundations of cooking whilst utilising modern techniques.” Ashley Palmer-Watts, Executive Chef at The Fat Duck said: “It’s been a pleasure to work with TVU’s passionate and inquisitive students, they were superb at producing clean and purposeful food tonight, there are definitely some future stars here.”
