Once I have all the shadows started in the mix above, I then go in lightly with some AA Transparent Sepia followed by Smoke Sepia building up the shadows.

Working back and forth with the colors in the previous step, I have the main skulls completed enough to move on. I then spray a pur- ple/black mix around the base of the helmet where no skulls will be. This will allow me to remove any skulls I don’t like and also allows me to get the colors and contrast I want while finalizing the skulls.

After the black mix is down, I go back using the same colors and fine tune the details of all the closest skulls and the ones floating on top. I then finalize the center ones using the Sepia Smoke and push- ing them further back. Remember, no highlights sprayed on the center furthest away skulls, use the base color for highlights and only darken in the shadows. The more Sepia Smoke you spray, the further away they will appear. Use the white for highlights on the closer/ outer skulls while always paying attention to where your light source is coming from. And last but not least, only use black for the darkest areas of the skulls, such as the deepest parts of the Eye sockets and nose.
