TEN MINUTE FLAMES by Brian Fuelleman

Step 1 - While I am showing this being done in Adobe Illus- trator CS3, this same method can be used in any version of Illustrator from version 8.0 and newer. In a new document I go to my tool pallet and pick the ellipse tool. This tool lets you draw smooth circles and ovals.

Step 2 - With the ellipse tool chosen I make circle or el- lipse on my document. Initially I am keeping the circle with a black outline and a white fill to make it easier for you to see what I am doing. In later steps I will change the fill to black and eliminate the outline or stroke before I make this a brush.

Step 3- I choose the hollow arrow tool from my tool pallet, this arrow lets me grab and manipulate anchor points and handles individually.

Step 4 - Using the hollow arrow tool I click and drag the bottom anchor point on my circle down so that it creates a giant teardrop shape with the pointy end down.

Step 5 - I go to my tool pallet and pick my pen tool, this may be the most powerful single tool or skill you can learn to use for vector graphics or raster graphics programs like Photoshop, Panter, etc.

Step 6 - After choosing the pen /path tool from my tool pallet, I retract (pull in) both of the “handles” on that anchor point I moved downwards so that the tip of my teardrop is a sharp point. Next I go to my “Window” menu at the top of my screen and pull it down and select the “Brushes” menu, this will make the brushes menu appear on my screen.
