Ladies and gentlemen, fire up your grills! Invite your friends over for snacks! It’s summer, and food should be fun. We dug through the research, checked the supermarket, and yes, conducted some taste tests to find two swaps that will leave you feeling fully satisfied—and a whole lot healthier.
The Swap
IF YOU LOVE: Hamburgers (3-oz. burger = approx. 14 g. fat) HERE’S YOUR SWAP: Bison Burgers (3-oz. burger = approx. 7 g. fat)
This summer, swap fatty, beef burgers for lean and delicious bison burgers, and discover the phenomenal taste and health benefits of America’s indigenous meat. Not only do bison burgers have half the fat of beef burgers and 25 percent fewer calories, they are also packed with fortifying vitamin B12 and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. the harsh summer sun. A study by the National Institutes of Health shows that consuming omega-3 fatty acids significantly increases your body’s ability to repair itself after being exposed to ultraviolet light, as well as reduces skin inflammation. But don’t forget your sunscreen too!
Bison meat tastes sweeter and nuttier than beef.
Bison is the scientific name for “buffalo,” and no they don’t have wings!
BODY BONUS: Grass-fed bison meat is 28 percent higher in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than beef.CLAs reduce body fat and build muscle.More importantly though,CLAs may lower your risk of cancer because they reduce inflammation as well as slow down and prevent the growth of tumors. Who knew grill- ing out could be part of your cancer prevention plan? (Be aware though, charred meats are a known carcinogen. So skip the black grill marks. The National BisonAssociation recommends going “low and slow” when cooking bison.)

Try It This Way: Bison is as versatile as beef and is delicious in pasta sauces, tacos and soups. For an easy way to introduce bison to the family, try bison chili or bison meatloaf. Brown bison and save it for quick meal preparation later. Cooked ground bison will stay good in the freezer for two to three months. Feeling like a cowboy? Look for bison jerky at your grocery store!
