ONE STEP AT A TIME

MY WORRY

Cross These Off Your Worry List_

THE REALITY

I love eggs. Can they be part of a heart-healthy diet?

One large egg has 213 mg of

cholesterol. If you aren’t at risk for high cholesterol, your recom- mended daily intake of cholesterol is 300 mg, and if you have high cholesterol or heart disease, it’s 200 mg.

MY WORRY

I burp and pass gas … a lot.

MY WORRY

I had a heart attack. Does this

mean my sex life is over?

You too? Everyone has gas in their digestive tract. Gas comes from either swallowing too much air or eating foods that are hard to digest. Gas is much more common than people admit. It’s normal to

pass gas 14 to 23 times a day.

glad it’s not just me

THE REALITY

_

According to the American Heart Association, there’s no reason why heart patients or stroke survivors can’t go back to their sexual activity as soon as they feel ready. For most people, this

is probably three to four weeks after a heart attack.

AHA!

It’s all about balance. If you have high cholesterol or heart disease, you can still eat an egg, but then stay away from cholesterol the rest of the day. Or eat only egg whites, they have zero cholesterol!

yea breakfast!

AHA!

To avoid swallowing too much air:

• Don’t chew gum or suck on long-lasting candies.

• Eat more slowly.

To reduce intestinal gas:

• Stay away from diet gum and candies that have sorbitol or fructose, which are known gas producers.

_ _

• Limit carbonated beverages. The carbon dioxide that creates the fi zz can also create gas.

AHA!

Try these tips:

• Start slowly and work your way back to normal patterns.

Be patient.

• Choose a time when you’re relaxed and won’t be interrupted.

• Wait one to three hours after

eating a full meal so your food has time to digest.
