ONE STEP AT A TIME

ASPIRIN

The right choice for mild to

moderate pain.

COMMON BRAND NAMES: Bayer®, Bufferin®, St. Joseph®

WHAT IT DOES: Like NSAIDs, it inhibits the production of prostaglandin. Aspirin also prevents platelets from sticking together, reducing the tendency of the blood to clot. BEST FOR: Treating mild to moderate pain, inflammation and fever.

BONUS: Under the supervision of a doctor, also used to treat or prevent heart attacks, strokes, and chest pain.

USE CAUTION: Can cause gastrointestinal bleeding. In addition, it should not be given to children or teens with fever, flu or cold symptoms because of an association between aspirin and the potentially fatal Reye’s syndrome.

COMBO DRUGS

COMMON BRAND NAMES: Excedrin®, Vanquish® (These combine aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine.)

WHAT THEY DO: Stop production of prostaglandin, and work on the central nervous system to block or decrease sensitivity to pain.

BEST FOR: Fast relief of tension headaches, migraine headaches, muscle aches, menstrual cramps, arthritis and toothaches.

Best for headaches (no more guessing).

BONUS: The addition of caffeine in combo pain relievers makes them more effective in treating headaches and helps the body absorb the medicine more quickly.

Watch out for same active

ingredient!

CAUTION:

KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TAKING

Don’t take multiple medicines with the same active ingredient at the same time. Many multi-symptom pain, cough, cold and allergy medications contain acetaminophen or NSAIDs in addition to decongestants, antihistamines and cough suppressants. If you’re not careful, you can end up taking too much of one ingredient. Acetaminophen overdose is one of the most common poisonings worldwide. To reduce the risk of accidental overdose, always read labels carefully. If you have

accidentally taken too much medicine, call 911, the National Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or your doctor.

It is important to get prompt treatment to avoid damage to your organs or death.
