RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore

• Chartwork and Tides • Meteorology • Collision Regulations • Seamanship

This is a course designed for students with a bit of prior knowledge – for instance for those who hold the RYA Day Skipper shore-based certificate. But don’t worry if you’re a bit rusty; the course contains some Day Skipper-level revision material.

Successful completion of this course leads to the award of RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore shore-based certificate. This in turn qualifies candidates to progress to Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore practical.

There are four main topic areas:

• Chartwork and tides – After

reviewing chartwork, magnetic compasses and position, students proceed to more advanced position fixing, good GPS and other electronic practice. Tidal heights, especially secondary ports, and tidal streams are studied in depth.

• Meteorology – The causes of weather, pressure systems and weather terminology are covered and lead on to practical weather map interpretation and forecasting.

• Collision regulations – Students

build upon the International Rules for the Prevention of Collision at Sea covered in the RYA Day Skipper course and focus on lights, shapes and sound signals with plenty of illustrative examples to help with the correct application of the rules.

• Seamanship – This section covers subjects such as safety, bad weather and poor visibility in greater depth than Day Skipper.

The correspondence course fitted in well with my busy life. I thoroughly enjoyed the MAIB reports and would be very happy to be a future reference of recommendation for Tiller.
