RYA First Aid
A one-day course teaching the basics of first aid with particular emphasis on the types of situation which may be encountered on a small boat at sea.
The syllabus includes:
• The aims of first aid – the three P’s: Preserve Life, Prevent the situation from worsening and Promote recovery
• Priorities of treatment and emergency action plans
• Level of response, the recovery position and CPR
• Drowning and breathing difficulties • Circulatory shock
• Control of bleeding, internal bleeding, recognition and signs of shock
• Cardiogenic shock
• Head injuries, including concussion, compression and fractured skulls
• Immersion hypothermia and cold shock
• Sunstroke, heat exhaustion and febrile convulsion in children
• Seasickness and dehydration • Diabetic emergency
• Seizures
• Fractures including spinal injuries and the modified recovery position
• Advice and assistance by VHF radio • Medivac – evacuation by helicopter • First aid kits • Cat C first aid kit, pocket mask
• Weils disease, blue green algae, child CPR, marine stings and fish hooks
The marking comments were very promptly provided and very helpful. I could not find anything to complain about! An excellent course.
