RYA Day Skipper
• Seamanship • Navigation
No prior knowledge is required for this beginners’ course, the successful completion of which arms candidates with the theoretical knowledge required for the RYA Day Skipper practical course (sail and motor), the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) and the RYA Intermediate Powerboat course.
The course is split into two broad topic areas:
• Seamanship – including maritime terminology, ropes and mooring, anchoring, safety at sea and the International Rules for the Prevention of Collision at Sea.
• Navigation – including chartwork, tides, magnetic compasses, pilotage, planning and making a passage, basic meteorology and weather forecasting.
Being able to adjust timings to suit my work commitments — working hard on the course when I had time and leaving it to one side when I was too busy. Overall, the course was excellent — many thanks to all of you.
