Breaking Through the
Expanded rail system offers smart solutions with environmental benefi ts
Just as a highway can become congested, so, too, can a transit rail system. The main commuter transit system between New York and New Jersey relies on two 100-year-old tunnels beneath the Hudson River. About 170,000 passengers take this commuter rail system from New Jersey to New York every day, and after a century of use, the system has reached its capacity, forcing many passengers to use less effi cient means to access Manhattan.
