We play golf all over the world on different types of courses and in different conditions, which give different problems to us golfers. We practise hitting balls on the driving range for hours on end and swing in the garden all night when we get home from work, but we never work on the mind? The mind has a huge part to play in the game but we spend almost no time on it what so ever. I believe that 70% of the game is in the head, so it is very important to have the right state of mind! I will give you an example - when you are playing well on the course you are always positive, both in your thoughts and your approach! You stand on the tee look at what is in front of you and you pick the club for the job. You can almost picture the shot, you can only picture one outcome and that is the right one!
However, when you are not playing well everything goes wrong. You cannot picture the shot, you struggle to choose the right club and you cannot visualise the shot at all and you just hope it goes well. It may also be that one day you are playing well the next day your shots are all over the place. What’s happened? You cannot lose your swing overnight. So what’s changed? Well, most of the time it’s in your head.
How are you feeling on the day - tired, too relaxed? What about the social and environmental aspects involved with playing? All these aspects affect how we play the game on the day. You have to make the most of the conditions and take each shot as it comes. There are multiple ways to help strengthen the mind; one way is always being committed to the shot. There is nothing worse than going into a shot without being 100% committed. Just like your swing the only way to improve the mind is to seek help. Remember the mind is the key to becoming a better golfer!
