Ice hockey
COMPILED BY THE POST’S JASON MACKEY AND DAVE YANOVITZ
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
GK Donnie Walter
Gonzaga / Sr.
Walter was stellar in goal as the Eagles went 17-4-3, won the Mid-Atlantic Prep Hockey League title and finished as The Post’s No. 1 team. He saved his best game for the final, when he made several key saves late in the third period to preserve a 3-2win over rival DeMatha. Walter had an .890 save percentage this season, a 2.45 goals against average and was named MVP of the playoffs. In the postseason he improved his save percentage to .920 and lowered his goals against average to 2.33.
The moment I cracked the code was . . .
“ . . . making the varsity as a sophomore at Gonzaga. I had pretty big shoes to fill, [at a] pretty good school at hockey. I just wanted to be a part of the team.”
