1st Mini Maxi Class, Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup
Niklas Zennstrom’s Judel Vrolijk 72-footer Ran 2 had a blistering
season. Among her 2009 successes, winning the Fastnet overall
and taking victory in the fiercely fought Mini Maxi class at the Maxi
Yacht Rolex Cup must rate as the highlights.
The largest of four mini maxis launched in 2009, Ran 2 was
designed without the constraints of a box rule and was specifically
intended to be at the larger end of the mini maxi scale to maintain
an edge on a crowded start line. But while her basic configuration
has produced a rocket ship, the devil is in the detail. Her sail
handling systems and her innovative approach to deck layout has
created a highly versatile high-performance machine.
Certainly a 105 per cent headsail reduces some of the deck gear
and she has a fixed bowsprit rather than a spinnaker pole. Less
obvious is the mechanics of the pedestal-driven winch package
which allows greater flexibility in the way that deck gear is used for
certain manoeuvres, in particular spinnaker hoists and drops.
However, she pays under IRC for her high-tech inventory,
particularly the three-spreader carbon rig, composite rigging,
checkstays and retractable propeller.

reduce twisting loads on the mainsheet car.

fin and lead bulb.
■ Composite rigging
