Gina Castelli enters her 20th season
at Siena as the winningest basketball
coach in school history as well as the
longest-tenured active men’s or women’s
basketball coach in the MAAC.
Castelli surpassed legendary men’s
coach Dan Cunha in 2004 shortly
before picking up her milestone 250th
career victory. She begins the 2009-10
campaign one win shy of 300. In 2005, Castelli guided the
Saints to their 500th win in program history and in 2008-09 won
Siena’s 200th MAAC game. During her tenure, Castelli has
turned Siena into a perennial contender both in the MAAC and
the Northeast. The Saints have posted seven 20-win seasons
during her 19-year leadership. In 2001, Siena advanced to the
NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
Castelli became the seventh women’s basketball coach in Siena
history prior to the 1990-91 season, after serving as an assistant
at Siena under Jim Jabir. In her 19-year tenure, Castelli has
taken home seven MAAC regular-season championships and
one tournament championship, compiling a 197-120 conference
record and a 299-245 mark overall.
In 19 seasons, Castelli has been honored on five occasions as
MAAC Coach of the Year (1991, 1994, 1998, 2001, 2002).
Castelli wasted no time engraving her name in MAAC history.
In her inaugural season (1990-91), she guided the Saints to a
21-7 record, placing second in the MAAC. She also received
her first MAAC Coach of the Year award. As the fourth youngest
coach in Division I at the time (27), Castelli was selected New
York State Division I Coach of the Year. She repeated the
honor in 1999. 2006-07 and 2007-08 by the NCAA for posting a multi-year
Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all
Castelli has coached 34 All-MAAC selections, including 14 First Division I women’s basketball programs. Siena was among 32
Team honorees. She has mentored five MAAC Players of the institutions in 2006-07 and 35 in 2007-08 after securing an
Year, four MAAC Rookies of the Year and most notably a GTE impressive multi-year APR. Additionally, five Saints earned
District II All-American. Player of the Year honorees include: MAAC All-Academic Team honors at the conclusion of the
Val Higgins (1991), Liz Lops (1994), Melanie Halker (1998 & 2008-09 campaign. Siena tied for the national lead in 2003
