Photography at Sea
by Patrick Roach and
Fred Barter
This is a fascinating book for all who try
to capture the awesome scenery and
incidents that we try to photograph at
sea. There is no doubt that maritime
photography requires special techniques
and some equipment other than a
camera. Patrick Roach is one of our most
successful photographers and explains
how to get the best shot and dramatic
effects whilst taking photographs at sea.
He discusses shot composition, capturing
groups of action, taking fast shots
capturing the dramatic and how to shoot
interiors of yachts. There is much in the
book for every amateur who, like me, tries
Stockwin’s Maritime Miscellany
ones best with limited knowledge.

A fascinating selection of tales, feats, fantasies, superstitions and nautical
beliefs explained and unravelled by Julian Stockwin whose Thomas Kydd

series has made him the Alexander Kent of our time. It is a lovely collection
that can be dipped into from time to time. I loved this one: ‘But this learned I
from my dear mother - The kiss of a seaman’s worth two of another’.
Dare I say it but a great present for the nautical nut for whom buying
presents is always difficult! All these books are available
through our shop at www.
