save weight for higher performance.
Security exceed the requisite European
standard, but just in case, two extra
crash boxes are provided and there are
four watertight bulkheads.
The deck design is particularly clever.
Four Harken winches, two for the mail
sail, one for the davits, serves the
dinghy and the spinnaker’s sheets and
two for the headsails that are suitably
high for someone of an average size.
The area over the coach roof is large
enough, there is a flush-deck and
the storage rooms are reasonably
roomy. I would just have added one
or two stairs to get to the coach roof
more easily. The helm station seats
remind me of the Open 60 style and
are incredibly comfy, they are indeed
custom-tailored moulded. I was first
sceptical, questioning their position and
usefulness, thinking they would take
too much space and would be in the
way for manoeuvring but actually I was
wrong. Steering the Outremer 49 with
a tiller is quiet pleasant, even more with
the waves we had this day. With 23
knots of apparent wind at 100° from the
wind, we easily get 12 knots without »
apparent effort accelerating to 17 knots
