and you have 30 to work with. During
my first lessons we didn’t even touched
the black keys so being alone, I run my
right hand fingers up and down them
like a child, making a twinkling noise.
After that, I get down to the business of
practice. For 20 minutes I repeat: Twin-

After 3 more weeks of lessons
with Bill and 3 days of practicing on
my own each week, I can play 4 short,
simple songs on the piano without
much error. Simon Cowell would not
be impressed and no one would pay
to hear me play. They may not even
sit to listen to a free concert. However,
the initial skills are now mine. Like
seeds, they need to be exposed to
the elements to grow into flourishing
talent. Not as enamoured now with the
power of the ivory keys, I sometimes
still want to slack off from practice.
But the experience has led me to start
saving for a used, upright piano that will
be ready for practice and impromptu
playing.
Through my experiment with
finding talent, I learned that, for me,
it is something attained through hard
work, practice and determination. The
younger you are when beginning a new
skill, the more talent you can possibly
express as an adult. Talent is also
objective. To be classified as talented,
the performer must impress at least one
other person. Talent is in the eye or ear
of the beholder.
