Now I want to make a skull out of the fire. This
is very easy. I place my skull stencil where I
want it, and use my transparent red oxide to
color in the eyes, nose, and mouth. I prefer
a light dusting to give it a ghosted look. I al-
low my overspray to lightly build around my
outside edges.
I switch back to my white to start working it into the next layer of definition of fire. I use
all the curves on my fire stencils to protect all the “dark” or low areas of the skull (eyes,
nose, mouth, etc). I use my white to build up on all the “high” points of my face, and pull it
off into the fire the same way I did when adding the first layer of definition.
Once my skull is sufficiently worked into
the fire, I continue with my fire stencils and
white paint to add another layer of definition
throughout my fire. Now you can see why it’s
important to not leave any of the layers behind
this one pure white. If you did, you wouldn’t
see all the definition this layer provides. Now
I begin adding my final color, transparent yel-
low. Because this is a transparent paint, it al-
lows light to pass right through it, so you can
see what is underneath. The various shades
of red oxide, dirty white, and bright white will
cause the transparent yellow to have many
different shades. I apply my transparent yel-
low not only to the bright white layer of defini-
tion I just added, but also to all the layers of
fire under it. There you have it! Nice, quick,
and easy fire. Because we used transparent
colors, and varying shades and intensities of
white, it looks like you used many different
colors for your fire instead of just three!
