Next, I used Auto Air Semi-Opaque Deep Red to begin the waves and shading in
the red. As mentioned, I always do the red first because once the white stripes
are removed; I already have the “flow” of the waves to go by.
NOTE: Most people at the point will leave it and move on. But, at this point I will
also start adding the seam were the stitches will be (notice at the bottom of the
red stripes). A lot of artists leave out the seam and stitches which is ok but I
always like “paying attention to the details” to give that extra realism.
Once I’m satisfied and have enough waves and movement established, I remove
the white strips. At this point I will clean up any under spray that may have oc-
curred.
I then begin working the shading in the white using Private Stock Shading Black.
Now I can actually do “All” the wave movement using the Shading Black on the
white stripes and overlapping it into the red stripes which will push them back
further. Again paying close attention to the seam where the stitches will be.
Here is an angled shot, from outside the garage with all the shading on the stripes
complete. I think it has the movement I’m looking for.
Now here is were the problems began. I would normally “cut out’ and leave the
stars masked and pull up the blue area at this point. Remember I didn’t have any
masking material, so I cut out the stars and made a stencil. Pictures are missing at
this point but here’s what happened.
I sprayed the blue using Auto Air Transparent Cobalt Blue and layered it to get the
depth and shadows. I then placed the stencil and sprayed white thru the stars cut-
outs. I removed the stencil and had more under spray than I wanted. At this point
pictures were the last thing on my mind.....just fix it was my only thought. So I spray
the blue again over stars and all. I then went in with the wall paint and painted each
star with a paintbrush, their silhouettes were still there under the Transparent
Auto Air. So here is the blue and stars after I reworked them twice.
