Certainly we live in interesting times and in this context, ‘interesting’ is code
for challenging. I have come to the conclusion, however, that the members of every
previous generation believed that they lived in ‘interesting’ times as well. So let’s
agree that we are no different today than those before us, even though much has
changed recently.
I mention this because you need to know that we are absolutely committed to
communicate the interior design industry message as effectively and efficiently
as possible. And even though these ‘interesting’ times have put a damper on con-
sumer enthusiasm today, we know that what those in our industry do — create and
define extraordinary living environments — will continue to contribute to who
we are as a society and a culture. In this premier national issue of Design Trade
Magazine, we showcase the visionary creators of beautiful products along with the
exceptional designers who bring them together in breathtaking ensembles as well
as the inspirational design showrooms across the country where these two parties
often meet.
We realize we must do much more together to not only survive but to thrive in

‘interesting’ times. After three months we celebrated the arrival of our 1,000th fan
of our Facebook page (you can fan our page at
www.facebook.com/designtrade) in
with the touch of a button
addition to more than 4,000 Twitter followers (you can follow us at www.twitter.
com/designtrade). To be clear, we did not engage the social media frontier because
we believe it is the next great profit opportunity, although we do think it has prom-

it is currently the best publishing solution for the best (and oldest) form of advertis-
ing: word of mouth. The barrier has never been lower to share what’s on your mind
or in your living room with your friends and colleagues. My guess is that many of
your acquaintances, young or old, are active on Facebook already and you should

be, too. (Be sure to see our technology article on pages 94-95.)
We are also in the midst of redesigning our Web site,
www.designtrade.net.
That’s where we will combine our magazine editorial, our powerful product search
engine and our social media expertise all in one place. You will soon be able to
source and shop product, read reviews, stay on top of current events and share
everything with your existing social network without having to manage another te-
dious Internet profile. If you are a designer, manufacturer or showroom, this spells
opportunity — an opportunity to engage the community and consumer in exciting
and efficient ways. If you are a consumer, you will gain access to the world’s most
talented interior designers and the products they represent as never before.
I will be the first to admit that I am reluctant to embrace change or ‘interesting’
times. I like to make things work and then expect them to work indefinitely. And
for 20 years as a print publisher supporting the interior design industry we have
had things our way. But today is a new day, an ‘interesting’ day, and we want you
to know that Design Trade is committed to be your publisher, friend and fan as we
write, edit and publish this next chapter of interior design history together.
