was handcrafted by Kalogridis International, as well as in the accent
pillows and medallions on the valance panels.
The office showcases their most challenging and rewarding projects
on this aircraft. The ceiling panel features a sky hand-painted by arti-
san Harold Wood, a friend of Jerry’s, and chairs, which were all hand-
sewn by GDC craftsmen in leather from Spinneybeck. The greatest
challenge, according to the Gores, was the construction of the desk.
The original plans called for it to be constructed out of a perforated
metal screen, however, the shape was not conducive to the material. A
carbon fiber was chosen in the end, and the design became a contem-
porary focal point of the room. The traditional styling of the desktop
veneer provides a sharp contrast to the contemporary base.
The desk and other pieces that combine traditional contemporary
styling were chosen to represent the rich heritage of the country and
show the country’s progress and infiltration to the modern world. Dec-
orative medallions on the valance panels bear tribal symbols, another
reflection on the country’s heritage. All metal pieces on the aircraft,
including the medallions, were gold-plated in 24-karat gold.
Accommodating the technology needs of a traveling head-of-state
was an important part of this project. The environment had to be
conducive to meetings, both large and small, as well as entertaining
guests. To achieve this goal, the plane was fitted with 42-inch plasma
monitors and wired for surround sound.
Close to two years were spent working on this aircraft. GDC had 16
months of lead-time before the plane arrived and the installation took
six months. The Gores state, “As a project, this was the best creative
effort we have worked on.” They add that having a customer give ap-
proval at a first meeting is a rare occurrence in this industry.
