To accomplish the room’s dual-purpose agenda, the most obvious
element needed in the second group was a bed. Drake chose a queen
daybed that alternates as seating during gatherings or reading ses-
sions; he outfitted the piece in a silver glazed linen fabric from Celerie
Kemble’s new collection for Schumacher. The bed is detailed with the
luxurious touch of crystals from Swarovski Crystallized Elements.
The crystals appear on the buttons and legs of the bed and add a touch
of couture to the room. Instead of dominating the room, the daybed
blends in perfectly with the tranquil ambiance. The placement of the
daybed was critical, as it could compromise the library’s identity by
appearing to be a guest bedroom. Drake placed the daybed in the cen-
ter of the room, defining it as an accessory, rather than a focal point.
The third group of furnishings is housed in a quaint corner, which
serves as a reading nook or a place to enjoy a casual meal with friends.
The mammoth bookcase, designed by Christian Liaigre for Holly
Hunt in dark wenge wood, provides a sturdy home for valued first-
edition books, and a totemic high-backed chair and ottoman by Jamie
Drake provides all the comfort needed to enjoy them. Drake describes
it as “the perfect place for dinner for two or four, or a landing zone
for a laptop.”
Several distinct elements were added to bring the different aspects
of the library together. A lined chandelier by Fontana Arte and a Bor-
deaux wool carpet from Sacco Carpets complemented the sophisti-
cated design. Custom-colored wall covering from Alpha Workshops
accentuated the library’s dark stained woodwork and the curtains,
banded with Samuel & Sons trim, are also enhanced with Swarovski
crystals. The final product is a multi-purpose room that radiates el-
egance and class, allowing its owner to enjoy it either reading alone
or entertaining friends.
