Rebecca interned with the Environment
Defenders Office (EDO) in 2008, and the Tenants
Union of Victoria, coordinated through the
Victoria Law Foundation, in 2009.
What attracted you to two very different
policy-based internship programs?
I found out about the EDO during a
presentation at the Law School at the
University of Melbourne. I was interested in
environmental law as a career and the EDO internship seemed like a
great way to gain practical experience in the area, due to the diverse
range of work the organisation does, from advising clients to policy
and law reform.
The Tenants Union internship was organised through the Victoria
Law Foundation policy internship program. I was attracted to the
internship because of the policy focus. The Victoria Law Foundation
program was fantastic because it involved a number of seminars
and workshops which enabled interns to meet people from different
government agencies, develop networking skills and gain experience
in pro bono legal work.
What responsibilities did you have in your internships?
The main focus of my EDO internship was drafting a response to
the Victorian Coastal Strategy. I had taken a year off my law degree
to complete honours in Geography with a specialisation in Coastal
Geomorphology before I began my internship. It was a terrific
opportunity to use my geography degree and develop legal research
skills.
At the Tenants Union I was responsible for drafting a submission on
the capacity of third parties to gain injunctions against landlords
who have repeatedly failed to fulfil their obligations under residential
tenancy law. I found similar cases in Australia and overseas and made
recommendations on the feasibility of such actions. I didn’t have any

experience in residential tenancy law before I began my internship so
it was a great chance to learn and challenge myself.
