UWS Student’s Project Helps Win
National Award
Wesley Kington, a University of Western Sydney
(UWS) Communications student, contributed to a
project which won an award at the 2008 National
Multicultural Marketing Awards.
Wesley’s five-week Vacation Project, organised
through Careers & Cooperative Education,
helped Australian Library Services win the
Microsoft Information Technology category of
the awards for their website portal
Mylanguage.gov.au.
Wesley assisted with filming short promotional
videos in 60 different languages for the State
Libraries of Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, the
Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory. The videos feature
on YouTube to promote the website portal which aims to improve access
to resources for people from non-English speaking backgrounds.
The Awards were presented at a Gala Dinner hosted by the Premier of
NSW on 25 November 2008 to acknowledge organisations that focus on
cultural diversity in marketing. Congratulating Australian Library Services,
Stepan Kerkyasharian, Chair of the Community Relations Commission, said,
“This is not just about a good idea or a good solution, it is also about clever
marketing techniques that actually use the resources of cultural diversity to
promote a service that is meeting diversity needs.”
Wesley’s commitment to the success of the project was commended
by Oriana Acevedo, Multicultural Consultant at the State Library of New
South Wales: “All the participants in this project were from culturally and
linguistically diverse backgrounds, and Wesley was always keen to work to
their requirements and improve the outcome of the filming.”
With career aspirations of screenwriting or cinematography, Wesley
comments that he now has a greater knowledge of what he is capable of
achieving. “I thoroughly recommend the vacation projects,” he said. “They
enable students to implement the skills and knowledge learnt from their
course in the real world.”
Wesley recently completed his second Careers & Cooperative Education
Vacation Project before undertaking the Bachelor of Communication Honours
Program at UWS this year.
