work experience bring an additional ‘x’ factor
to their roles.

P Work experience encompasses a wide
range of activities, paid or unpaid, including
full-time, casual and vacation work, as well
as voluntary work. It commonly involves
an element of on- or off-the-job training,
instruction and mentoring, and has a
predetermined end date.

P Benefits of work experience include
experience in applying for jobs; a feel for
the area of work and what is required in a
real life work situation; a ‘try before you buy’
concept for both parties; development of
skills employers want; opportunity to network
with individuals in your area of work; and the
possibility of future opportunities.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS

P Approach work experience like you would
a ‘real’ job. Behave like a real employee - be
punctual, dress appropriately and show
respect for your colleagues.

P Prepare a set of questions to ask an employer
before contacting them.

P Think about the area(s) you want/need to
develop while on your placement and talk
through this with your employer.
