Professional Ethics Survey Review
Committee Web Site Survey Help
Relaunched Available at JSM
T
he American Statistical Association’s Committee on Professional Ethics has
a new web presence, hosted at www.amstat.org/committees/ethics/index.html.
The committee’s vision is to make the site a useful tool to increase mem-
bers’ knowledge of ethical issues and dilemmas they will face in the course of their
professional careers and to help them become prepared to make sound decisions.
To do this, the site has posted the ASA Ethical Guidelines and other materials
that could be beneficial, such as papers from related sessions at the Joint Statistical
Meetings. In addition, the site has an expanding list of ethical scenarios designed to
increase sensitivity to and awareness of the sometimes difficult and precarious posi-
tions statisticians may face.
The committee previously had a web site hosted on a server at The College of
New Jersey, but it was taken down after thousands of inappropriate blogs were post-
ed to it. Last year’s Professional Ethics Committee chair, Margaret Nemeth, made it
a goal to have the new site up and running as soon as possible. Through her efforts
and the help of Bill Wong and the ASA’s webmaster, Ryan Bell, the site was relocated
and relaunched.

mittee chair, at tom.petska@verizon.net. ■
T
o assist ASA sections and com-
mittees planning surveys, the
Survey Review Committee
(SRC) will hold an open meeting during
the 2009 Joint Statistical Meetings on
August 3 from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in
Room 157 of the convention center.
Members and representatives of ASA
sections and committees currently devel-
oping a survey or considering one in the
near future are encouraged to attend.
During the meeting, SRC members
will be available to discuss all aspects
of the survey process, including sample
selection methods, questionnaire design,
survey implementation plans, and data
processing and analysis. Representatives
should bring any helpful information,
such as a current draft or a past survey
and an implementation and sample
selection plan.
The SRC reviews and approves sur-
veys of the ASA membership and sur-
veys sponsored by ASA sections and
committees. The SRC is charged with
maintaining methodological standards,
minimizing respondent burden, and
ensuring proposed surveys achieve their
intended goals.
