theme “reshaping health statistics.” The International
Association for Official Statistics is one of the sec-
tions of the International Statistical Institute.
The field of health statistics has lagged behind
other areas of statistics, particularly in relation to
reliable, timely, core information about health for
use within countries and for cross-national com-
parisons. One reason for this is that health and
health systems are extremely complex, and health
