MEETINGS
I
t is hard to believe it has been 20 years since the Nominations for the scholarship are open to
first Cox scholarship race in 1989. That race women who are citizens or permanent residents of
coincided with the ASA’s 150th anniversary cel- the United States or Canada and who are admitted
ebration. Participants circled Rock Creek Park, to full-time study in a graduate statistics program
starting down the hill from what is now the Omni by July 1 of the award year. Women in or entering

Marriott Wardman Park) was the Joint Statistical
Meetings headquarters.

Statistics (COWIS) and the Caucus for
1989 issue of Amstat News.
Women in Statistics have jointly sponsored
the Gertrude Cox scholarship and race since
the outset. Planning for the scholarship start-
ed with a meeting of a joint ASA and caucus
committee at JSM 1986 in Chicago, Illinois.
Committee members were Susan Devlin (chair,
ASA), Sandra McKenzie (vice chair, caucus),
Anne Parkhurst (ASA), and Marcia Feingold
(caucus). The goal of the scholarship is to encour-
age more women to enter statistically oriented
professions and “to celebrate the community and
commonality among the statistical professions.”
A plan for fundraising and recipient selection was
devised. Over time, recipient selection became the
responsibility of the ASA (COWIS) with input from
the caucus, while the caucus has been spearheading
the fundraising aspects. To make the scholarship more
visible and to raise funds, the caucus decided to spon-
sor a fun run and walk; this has become an annual
event at the Joint Statistical Meetings. In recent years,
the ASA has been actively involved with the promo-
tion and logistics of the event.
The first Gertrude Cox
Scholarship 5k race
and fun run took place
Sunday, August 6, 1989,
in Washington, DC. Thirty
people participated in the
fun run, and 127 runners
completed the 5k race.
