ber of the Danbury mineralogy society,
will display and talk about his collection
of NY state specimens, and visitors can
bring minerals for identification. Crystals
and jewelry will be on sale throughout
the weekend, and food will be available
outside on the lawn.
The Rock and Mineral Weekend takes
place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 6 and
7 at the Putnam Valley Grange Bldg, 128
Mill Street, Putnam Valley. Admission is $4
for adults, $2.50 for seniors and students,

Honored at
Relay for Life
A
cancer diagnosis can be a scary, life-
changing event and…a reason to grab
friends and family members to stay up all
night celebrating? The American Cancer
Society’s Relay for Life invites people to
honor the lives of cancer survivors within
their community at an overnight event
which says that cancer doesn’t sleep
and neither should society until a cure
is found.
Relay for Life opens with cancer sur-
vivors of all ages walking around the track
for a first lap. The event features a lumi-
naria ceremony held at nightfall to honor
cancer survivors and remember those lost
to cancer. The luminaria candles that line
the track are left burning throughout the
night as a reminder to participants of the
importance of their involvement in Relay
for Life. Teams of ten to fifteen people,
camped out around the track, take turns
walking laps for 24 hours to raise aware-
ness and money for cancer research,
education, advocacy and care.
There are six Relay for Life events
taking place in Westchester County
this month: in Yonkers on June 5-6, in
Yorktown, Mount Vernon and Ossining
on June 12-13, in White Plains on June
19-20, and in Peekskill on June 20-21.
