sadly missed
but not forgotten
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to players
who have enjoyed a long term association with Ham Polo Club
Jim Edwards - adventurer, conservationist, entrepreneur, and extrovert. Born November 1935 in Jersey, Channel
Islands. After various jobs Jim moved to Nepal in 1962, where he started a hunting company. Taking over
‘Tiger Tops’ in 1972 and ‘Mountain Travel’ in 1975, he founded the ‘World Elephant Polo Association’ and the
‘International Trust for Nature Conservation’ as well as being a lifelong supporter of the ‘Jersey Wildlife Trust’.
He married Fjola Bender from Iceland, and later Belinda Fuchs from Switzerland. Jim will be greatly missed by his
four children, Kristjan, Anna Tara, Tim and Jack, as well as his extended family.
Jim was a long term associate of Ham Polo Club, both as a social member and player with his Tiger Tops Team
and we remember fondly memorable parties with plenty of whisky fl owing. In his latter years, when visiting the
UK, Jim would make an annual pilgrimage with his delightful camp followers to have lunch and watch his beloved
game of polo. Life was never dull when Jim was around.
We mourn his passing but in Virgil’s words – meminisse juvabimus – we shall delight in remembering.
Photograph desciption in here - no more
than two/three lines preferably.
Bryan Morrison came to Ham Polo Club in the 1970’s to learn the basics of polo, cantering out into Richmond
Park every dawn with Billy Walsh and playing his fi rst chukkas at the club.
In 1985, Bryan bought a race training track near Ascot and founded his own polo club, the Royal County of
Berkshire Polo Club. It was there that he introduced ‘All Weather Arena Polo’, which is now so popular. For his
services to polo Bryan was fondly given the title ‘Godfather’.
In July 2006, playing in a birthday match at Royal Berkshire, Bryan came off his horse and lost consciousness
never to recover. Sadly, after being in a coma for over two years, he died in September 2008. It was a
poignant loss for his children, Jamie and Karina and his wife Greta.
Paul Sweeney and his family formed an association with Tim Healy and Tom Benson a good decade or so ago,

allowing Ham Polo Club players to continue with their addiction to polo at Ash Farm throughout summer and

Many of our playing members benefi ted from the teachings of Paul and his family, giving them a marked
confi dence and added ability when they return to grass polo. In 2007 Ash Farm and Ham Polo Club joined forces
to became offi cially associated, it was deemed most appropriate since each party became a benefi ciary of the
other. Paul was a very vital man and passionate about polo which brought him many successes with his own team
and to teams of his students and, with his vast knowledge, was then to become Chairman of the Arena Handicap
Committee and Member of the International Arena Committee. Accolade indeed.
Paul sadly died at his home in January this year leaving his family to carry on with the good work at Ash Farm. Our
thoughts are with them and we are profoundly grateful for the happy continuing affi liation. His passing will leave
a large void.
