The principal donors were a group of fi fty Virginians from the USA; King Power, Thailand; Wilden
Services, Robert Parker, Hannover Executives and Ruby Palmer of PWC.
Teams were La Dolfi na, based around the world’s top player, Adolfo Cambiaso, and
Umbogu, which included veteran international Pikki Diaz Alberdi. Umbogu had also recruited Prince
William, whose public polo appearances nowadays are for charity only; while Ham Polo
Club president Vichai Raksriaksorn was in the La Dolfi na colours.
The fi rst chukka, indeed, saw Umbogu take the lead, with two goals from Alberdi and one from Satnam
Dhillon, who is one of Britain’s fi nest young players. Cambiaso opened the account for La Dolfi na
and there was good defensive work from Prince William. At the end of the fi rst chukka Umbogu’s
advantage had been cut to 3-2½.
Cambiaso and his team-mate Martin Valent got into the swing of the game in the second chukka,
taking the lead 5½-3. In the third, Prince William scored from a long shot, followed by Alberdi.
Raksriaksorn replied and, going into the fi nal chukka the gap narrowed to 6½-5 in La Dolfi na’s favour.
Dhillon scored again for Umbogu but then time ran out and La Dolfi na were victorious by the close
margins of 6½-6.
