Underlying nearly all my work is my favorite Hebrew blessing,
known as Asher Yatsar, which acknowledges the machinery
ART
of human flesh—the messy miracle of our internal ”openings

and tubes,” their exquisite interdependence, and the implied
Fluxion
contradiction of embodied consciousness.
We are mortal, flesh, alive. We are constructed of bones,

issue
tissues, arteries and orifices. We bleed. We heal. We rise up

(and we fall down). We are a complicated set of astonishing
systems, connections and interactions. And I am continually
inspired and moved by this.
Sometimes lyrical, sometimes gripping, my work is always
meant to stretch our capacity to see, face and expand
our own humanity.
Asher Yatsar
Blessed are You, God,
Sovereign of the Universe,
who has intelligently
created human beings,
and crafted inside
many, many openings,
and many, many tubes.
It is completely obvious to You,
before the seat of Your Holiness,
that if one of these [tubes] might open,
or if one of these [openings] might close,
[when they really aren't supposed to,]
it would be impossible even to rise up
and stand before You.
Blessed are you, God,
the Healer of all flesh
and the Maker of miracles.
