Open water swim + Mountain bike + Trail run = OFF-ROAD TRIATHLON
Morgan Fortin, 16, Albuquerque, N.M.
Morgan got her start in off-road triathlon thanks to her family’s influence. She competed in a family relay with her mom and dad, each covering a different leg of the race. With a background in swimming and competitive mountain biking, she caught on quickly and was inspired to take on the full distance.
Favorite thing about of-road: “It takes you further away from cars, and I really love the outdoors. It’s cool to see more of the forest and run the trails.”
Best race: XTERRA TRI the Torture in Glorieta, New Mexico. Highlight: There’s a water slide finish.
Top tips: “Get out there, take your parents and bring your friends. Enjoy being able to be outside — it’s a luxury.”
Run + Bike + Run = DUATHLON
Jane Tullis, 16, South Bend, Ind.
Jane’s triathlon coach introduced her to the sport of duathlon. She did a couple local races to start before competing at the USA Triathlon Duathlon National Championships in 2016, where she placed first for athletes 15-19 and second overall.
Favorite thing about duathlon: “I love the bike. The swim is not my strongest so the run-bike-run is good for me.”
Best race: USA Triathlon Duathlon National Championships in Bend, Oregon. Highlight: Great venue and atmosphere, plus a chance to qualify for Worlds.
Top tips: “If swimming is the hardest part of your triathlon, duathlon is your chance to run, bike, run — and if you’re a good runner and cyclist, you’ll really do well in it. It’s a lot of fun and you can do it with a friend. Just enjoy it.”
Swim + run = AQUATHLON
Johnathan Dolan, 15, Atascadero, Calif.
Johnathan was on a club swim team and was doing some running, when he thought it would be fun to try a race that combined the two disciplines. Now he’s hooked on aquathlon, and he benefits from quality run training with his high school cross country and track teams.
Favorite thing about aquathlon: “It’s my two favorite sports combined.”
Best race: Alcatraz Challenge Aquathlon in San Francisco, California. Highlight: Swimming from Alcatraz Island and running across the Golden Gate Bridge.
Top tips: “Join a club swim team. The swim is really important so you want to get good at that.”
