WTS ABU DHABI
The 2017 ITU World Triathlon Series opened March 3, with U.S. Olympian Katie Zaferes leading the charge with a seventh-place finish at IT U World Triathlon Abu Dhabi and New Zealand’s Andrea Hewitt capturing the win in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.


Zaferes (Hampstead, Md.) clocked in at 2 hours, 5 minutes, 2 seconds on the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike, 10-kilometer run to finish solidly in the top 10. Great Britain’s Jodie Stimpson also finished in 2:03:46, half a step behind Hewitt. Austria’s Sara Vilic earned her first career WTS podium finish, finishing third in 2:03:53.


2016 U.S. Olympian Greg Billington claimed a World Triathlon Series career-best seventh-place finish on March 4 at ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi, while Spain’s Javier Gomez returned to form as the day’s champion. Billington (Spokane, Wash.) posted a final time of 1:54:00 for the top-10 effort. His previous best finish in an ITU World Triathlon Series race was 10th at the Gold Coast series stop last April.


 


 


NEW PLYMOUTH (NZL) WORLD CUP
U.S. Olympian Katie Zaferes won her second New Plymouth ITU Triathlon World Cup title in New Zealand on April 2, while Matt McElroy (Huntington Beach, Calif.) ran his way to a second-place finish for his third career World Cup podium.


Zaferes, who was also the 2014 race champion, finished the 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer run course in 59 minutes, 28 seconds.


 


 


SARASOTA
American athletes won 23 medals March 11-12 at the Sarasota CAMTRI Sprint Triathlon American Championships in Nathan Benderson Park.


Sarah True (Hanover, N.H.) and Taylor Knibb (Washington, D.C.) placed second and third in the elite women’s race while Eli Hemming (Kiowa, Colo.) grabbed silver in the elite men’s event.


U.S. paratriathletes won the women’s PTHC — Mary Catherine Callahan (La Grange, Ill.), PTS2 — Allysa Seely (Glendale, Ariz.), PTS4 — Patricia Collins (Alexandria, Va.), PTS5 — Grace Norman (Jamestown, Ohio) and PTVI — Elizabeth Baker (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) sport classes while the American men were victorious in PTS2 — Mark Barr (Houston, Texas), PTS3 — Brian Norberg (Des Moines, Iowa), PTS4 — Jamie Brown (Carlsbad, Calif.), PTS5 — Chris Hammer (Salt Lake City, Utah) and PTVI — Aaron Scheidies (Seattle, Wash.).


The U.S. mixed team relay squad of Taylor Spivey (Redondo Beach, Calif.), Hemming, Erin Dolan (Bentonville, Ark.) and Jason West (State College, Pa.) finished second to Canada.


In the junior races, Darr Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) topped the podium for the men.


 


 


 


 


COOLEY, GUENTHER CLAIM WINTER NATIONALS TITLES
The 2017 USA Triathlon National Championships season opened Jan. 29 with Minnesotans Sean Cooley and Jan Guenther capturing overall amateur titles at the USA Triathlon Winter Triathlon National Championships, held as part of the King Boreas Winter Triathlon in Saint Paul, Minn.
