MIDEAST
Following the Paralympic year, where Dare-2tri athletes earned three medals in Paratriathlon at the Rio Games, 2017 is revving up to be a training-filled season for Dare2tri Paratriathlon Club youth, adult and injured service member athletes.

For the third consecutive year, Dare2tri will invite injured service members and veterans to its Injured Military Camp in Hammond, Indiana, on June 2-4, to participate in triathlon clinics, a paratriathlon 101 session and Leon’s Triathlon. Participants, volunteers and supporters can learn more about Injured Military Camp at www.dare2tri.org/injured-military-camp.

On July 11-12, children ages 6-21 with physical disabilities are invited to attend Dare2tri’s Kids Paratriathlon Training Camp in Chicago, Illinois. Athletes will participate in clinics, including: open water swimming, cycling, running/pushing, transition and nutrition. On the final day of camp, kids will compete in the Tri It Triathlon, a mini triathlon race, where many will earn their first race medals. Interested participants, volunteers and supporters can learn more about Kids Paratriathlon Training Camp by visiting: www.dare2tri.org/kids-paratriathlon-training-camp.

Dare2tri will also offer a Paratriathlon Training Camp on June 9-11, its largestattended camp of the season, in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, home of the 2017 USA Paratriathlon National Championships.

Dare2tri provides several volunteer opportunities to ensure athletes are provided with the best experience possible at races, practices and camps. To learn more about Dare2tri’s volunteer process, visit: www.dare2tri.org/volunteers.

MIDWEST
While the sun shines yearlong in some regions, the Midwest spends a good portion of the year in winter weather. In years past, the winter months could be marked without a single multisport race on the calendar, but recently there’s been a boom in winter multisport racing. Many athletes find that trying a new style of multisport racing is a great way to mix it up, have fun and keep the racing legs fresh.

Two popular types of offseason multisport racing include winter triathlon (runmountain bike-ski) and indoor triathlon. Winter triathlon offers an alternative to testing endurance and technical skills outdoors, while indoor triathlon offers the traditional swim-bike-run combination in a different atmosphere. Indoor triathlons have particularly grown in the collegiate field. The Midwest Collegiate Conference enjoys the unique and energizing atmosphere only an indoor race can offer.

Here in the Midwest, we’re making the transition into spring and hitting the roads once again, but challenge yourself next winter to put a winter multisport race on the calendar. Don’t let winter hinder what you love, keep multisport racing — snow or shine!

SOUTH MIDWEST
It is not an unusual story, especially for a young sport like triathlon: The suppressed athlete deep inside a sedentary body is sparked into rebirth and a life is forever changed. Diane Morrow-Kondos thought triathlon was a bucket list item after watching her husband compete. Then she took the leap and signed up for a triathlon. She admits, “A little old, a little chubby, a little out of shape — the only thing I possessed in abundance was doubt!” The 54-year-old traveled to Kansas with her gear and a dream. She learned something on that escape; she could not just do one.

The following summer going to USA Triathlon’s Clydesdale & Athena National Championships was a shorter drive from her Oklahoma home so with a new passion, she headed for Arkansas. Diane, a former college swimmer, came out of the water and faced something she did not see back in Tulsa: hills. Still, she won her age group.

Another year later in Michigan she defended her title successfully. Her future goal: Team USA Aquathlon. So far what lessons has she collected on this journey? “The swim is always longer than what it’s supposed to be, the term ‘rolling hills’ is very subjective, triathletes make the best friends and it’s never too late to achieve your dreams!”
