NCGA Team Match Play Championship Whitney Oaks | Oct. 24-25 | Poppy Hills GC
No team had ever won
three Team Match Play titles. Whitney Oaks just won its
third in a row. Whitney Oaks (Rocklin)
made NCGA history when it defeated Kings River GC 24- 12 in the finals at Poppy Hills, dominating the format that pits players in four-ball and singles matches simultaneously. “We’re proud of it,” said
Whitney Oaks won a record third straight NCGA Team Match Play title.
CGA Senior Championship John Pate | Poppy Hills GC | Nov. 10-12
Nearly 20 years ago, John Pate was beat in the finals of the California State Amateur Championship when Jeff Sanday sank a 20-foot putt on the 36th hole. When Pate tapped in on the 18th
hole at Poppy Hills to secure a two- stroke California Senior Amateur vic- tory, he couldn’t help but think of his near misses at Pebble Beach. “I guess this makes up for it a little
bit,” Pate acknowledged. Pate entered the final round of the
54-hole event with a four-shot lead, but a double-bogey on the eighth hole brought three-time State Senior cham- pion Jeff Burda to within two strokes. But Santa Barbara’s Pate, the broth- er of six-time PGA Tour winner Steve Pate, closed with a 2-over 73 finish at 1-over 214 and keep Burda two strokes
back. 2012 champ Casey Boyns and 2013 winner Jim Knoll finished four shots back in a tie for third. “It was a relief to finish
this off,” Pate said. Six-time NCGA Player
of the Year Randy Haag made his State Senior debut and tied for sixth at 12-over 225.
John Pate In the North/South Challenge Se-
nior Cup, the NCGA defended its title by beating the SCGA, 436-456. The NCGA team included Boyns, Burda, Knoll and Dan Bieber, and now leads the overall series 14-6.
Gary White, the Whitney Oaks captain. “We had been talking about the three-peat. We have a good mix from top to bottom.” Whitney Oaks jumped out to a commanding 12-0 lead thanks to sweeps by the duos of Jeff Burkhead- White and Kyle Gill- more-Chris Carolon, and won three more points in the third
group to clinch the title. “Whitney Oaks is such
a tough course that you learn to manage your game in all different environ- ments,” White said. “So we play well when we have to travel to other courses.” The third-place match
came down to the final group, where Ron Hurt’s
singles’ win rallied Oakhurst to a 19-17 victory over Wilcox Oaks.
Coverage of the first annual
NCGA Scramble Championship will appear in the spring edition of NCGA Golf.
