Hearing that was a huge monkey off my back. It was like I was set free.” Grandcolas still carries

the ticket stub from that con- cert, which carries a special inscription: “Like a river to the sea, Lauren. See you for a swim, Bono.” After that night, Grand-

colas began reclaiming his life. He joined The Olympic Club and was reinvigorated by the challenge of the course and cut-throat regular games with friends. In 2008 his father was going to give up his membership at Monterey Peninsula Country Club, so Jack took that over, and feels a spiritual connection to those beautiful courses. “It’s as close to heaven as

you can get,” he says. He is a lively playing

partner who can shape shots and has a penchant for pour- ing in clutch putts on the closing holes. Grandcolas has found

love again, too, with an artist named Sarah Hopkins. She understands that Lauren will always be part of Jack’s story, but Sarah has offered him the chance for a happy new ending. “She’s a wonderful wom-

an,” says Jack. “I never thought I could be this lucky twice.” Having left the corporate

world for various entrepre- neurial ventures, Grandcolas was recently presented with an intriguing opportunity by way of his Olympic Club acquaintance Randy Haag, the six-time NCGA player of the year. Haag is the vice president of development at

Cognutria, a nascent com- pany marketing scientifically- formulated “brain food” that promises to increase focus, energy level and cognitive function, while somehow tasting good, too. Cognutria offers granola and pancake mix, but its key product is bars that happen to fit quite nicely in a golf bag pocket. (Full disclosure: it’s entirely likely I have a chocolate- orange or lemon flavor bar in my bag at this very moment.) Grandcolas was skeptical about the benefits until he tried the stuff himself. “I couldn’t believe the dif-

ference,” he says. “Golfers will buy any piece of equipment that they think gives them

the slightest edge but they still stuff themselves on the course with fatty foods and sugary, often caffeinated drinks, all of which harms their perfor- mance. Doesn’t it make sense to fuel yourself with the right nutrition?” Spoken like a chief mar-

keting officer, which is now Grandcolas’s title. Cognutria is currently

seeking investors, but Jack isn’t overly concerned about the future. After all he’s been through, perspective comes easily. There’s a lyric he’s fond of that captures a particular worldview: I’ll see you again when the stars/Fall from the sky/And the moon has turned red/Over one tree hill.
