Tournament Official of the Year Peter Leimpeter

San Ramon’s Peter Leimpeter has seen a lot of golf in his 29 years volunteering with the NCGA. “The joy of my duties is seeing some good golf and meeting some good players,” said

Leimpeter, 72. “But then I’ve seen the young boys and girls, and I’ve seen their progression as players from the junior ranks to becoming a top amateurs. It’s like watching my own children. I was a part of those kids’ lives on the golf course, and watched them mature. That’s been special.” Leimpeter was introduced to the

Rules of Golf by former NCGA board member Jerry Blackmore. The two were playing a friendly round together, and Blackmore suggested to Leimpeter that he get more involved with the game. “It’s the best advice I ever got.

I’ve never looked back,” said Leim- peter. “Doing what I do has allowed me to work U.S. Amateur qualifiers and U.S. Open sectional qualifiers. That’s very special to me.”

Age: 68 Hometown: Sebastopol

How long have you been playing? 56 years Handicap: 9.1 Best round: 73 at Poppy Ridge Favorite course: Sonoma National

Favorite golf memory: Playing with my dad. We could relate to each other on the golf course better than anywhere else.

How long have you been volunteering? 16 years

How did you start? I saw raters on a local course and applied after talking to them.

Favorite part about volun-

teering? Getting to rate and play so many different layouts, and of course the great guys I rate with!

Favorite course rating memory: I drove around George Hoberg, who had terminal cancer. It was his last rat- ing, and it was great to watch as he accurately measured obstacles at Eagle Vines without getting out of the cart. Miss you George!
