TYPE 1 DIABETES: YO-YO DIETING HARMS KIDNEYS People with Type 1 diabetes who yo-yo


diet have a significant increase in the risk of kidney disease, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. Researchers examined the dieting patterns of 1,432 adults and found that those whose weight fluctuated the most experienced a 40% decline in the kidneys’ ability to filter toxins from the blood.


Fish Slows Multiple Sclerosis

sclerosis (MS) found that those who ate a diet high in fi sh experienced slower disease progression. Researchers speculated that the


omega-3 fatty acids and taurine in fi sh might help reduce infl ammation, which plays a pivotal role in the development and progression of MS. “The study also showed that for people who didn’t each much fi sh and were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, if they started eating more, they still benefi ted,” said neurologist Aravinthan Varatharaj, M.D., of the


University of Southampton. “This goes to show that making a


lifestyle change after diagnosis can have a positive impact.”


FISH, FRUITS, GRAINS, AND BEER CUT RISK OF RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS A review of 30 studies by the University of Leeds found that eating oily fish, such as salmon and sardines, fruits, and whole grains, along with drinking one beer a week cut the risk of rheumatoid arthritis. The protective eff ect of alcohol diminished with a higher intake.


INSOMNIA: SEDENTARY JOBS INHIBIT SLEEP People whose jobs are sedentary, which is estimated to be about 80% of the workforce, have a high risk of insomnia, according to a study published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology. Over the 10-year study period, sedentary workers experienced a 37% increase in insomnia symptoms while those with nontraditional schedules, such as working nights, had a 66% greater risk of needing “catch-up sleep.”


DIETS: WESTERN DIETS ACCELERATE BIOLOGICAL AGING People who eat a traditional Western diet age faster, even in young adulthood. Researchers at the University of Jyväskylä’s Gerontology Research Center in Finland studied more than 1,500 twins between the ages of 20 and 25. Those who ate diets low in vegetables and fruits and high in red meat, fast food, and sugar-sweetened soft drinks aged faster biologically than their chronological age. Those who ate a diet rich in vegetables and fruits with low amounts of red meat, fast food, and sugary drinks showed slower biological aging.

COLON CANCER: YOGURT DECREASES RISK Over time, eating yogurt could reduce the risk of developing certain types of colorectal cancer. A new study published in Gut Microbes found that eating yogurt at least twice a week lowered the risk of colon cancer caused by Bifidobacterium, a type of probiotic, which normally helps digest fiber and protects against infections. Too much of the bacteria, however, damages cells and causes cancer. About 30% of colon tumors are Bifidobacterium-positive, and researchers found that eating yogurt lowered the risk of cancer cells forming by 20%. They speculate that yogurt changes bacteria in the gut, thus lowering the risk of cancer cells forming.
