HEALTHY LIVING

His goal is to bring yoga back to basics and highlight the light, slow, and controlled breathing originally practiced.

modern breathing practices, which are often big and noisy. Realizing how counterintuitive the current method is, he set out to “challenge a misunderstanding about breathing and yoga.” His goal is to bring

yoga back to basics and highlight the light, slow, and controlled breathing originally practiced. As he sat down to

write the book, he was approached by Magdalena Kraler, who recently finished a doctoral thesis on the topic of yoga breath work.

Her research found that

the switch in yoga breathing technique likely occurred in the 1880s when Europe was suffering from tuberculosis outbreaks, which affected breathing. To help people who were

breathing fast and shallow and struggling for breath,

he learned that the hygiene movement began to spread, which preached taking full, deep breaths. The concept

associated deep breaths with the prevention of spreading germs. At the time, India was under British Empire rule, so the teaching made its way to those practicing yoga. While this book is geared

toward yoga instructors and students to help them learn how much they can use breathing off the mat to help with decongestion and to improve both blood circulation and oxygen flow, McKeown has several other books geared toward a general audience. He recommends The

Breathing Cure, about breathing for heath, and The Oxygen Advantage. He is also working on a

new book, The Sleep Cure, which will focus on using breathing for sleep.

many benefits: You will feel calmer. Your concentration will improve. You will perform better at cognitive tasks. Your circulation will improve. Your body will be better able to digest the food you eat. Organs including your brain and heart will receive optimal

levels of oxygen. The book Breathing for Yoga is about going back to basics. It

brings attention to how the ancient yogis actually breathed: light, slow, and controlled.

It means bringing that same awareness into your yoga

practice and carrying it into everyday life. Breathing isn’t just something

we do on the mat; it’s something we live by.
