Cut Cost of Your Prescription Drugs

9 easy ways to save more today. ::

BY DANIELLE BRAFF

rescription drug costs continue to spiral higher. But while the politicians in D.C. wrangle over

potential solutions, you can take action yourself to stem the rising tide. Here are nine strategies to lower

your family’s medication spending — which can be used even if you have health insurance.

USE A PRESCRIPTION COMPARISON TOOL

GoodRx (goodrx.com) and

SingleCare (singlecare.com) are price comparison services that help you save money with their coupons. Simply type your medication

name and dose into the app or website, and you can compare the prices for your prescription at local pharmacies using the GoodRx or SingleCare coupons. These services do not involve

your insurance. But even if you have 76 NEWSMAX MAXLIFE | MAY 2026

good prescription drug coverage, you may be surprised that you can save more money by paying for your medications out of pocket with GoodRx or SingleCare. In some cases, you can save up to 80% on your prescriptions.

JOIN COSTCO The bulk superstore has negotiated deals with many

drug companies, making some medications very cheap. You can pick up your prescriptions

at the store or have them shipped to you at home, but the cost will be different depending on how you receive it. Check Costco.com/cmpp,

where you can compare the Costco membership price to the cost if you buy the drug with your insurance.

DIRECT TO MANUFACTURER

This is an especially useful

strategy for the popular — and expensive — GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro and Ozempic. A deal between the federal

government and GLP-1 manufacturers Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk cuts the prices of these drugs from over $1,000 per month to between $199 and $449 per month, depending on your insurance, dosage amount, and how you buy the drug. Right now, buying directly from

the manufacturer rather than using a traditional pharmacy is typically the lowest-cost way to buy these medications. This strategy takes advantage

of direct-to-consumer (DTC) pricing. That’s when the drugmaker sells the medication straight to consumers through its own website or telehealth service. By bypassing the middlemen

(wholesalers, insurers, pharmacy benefit managers, and retail pharmacies), the manufacturer can cut added markups, distribution fees, and administrative costs.
