n 1996, Pepsi ran an ad during the Super Bowl encouraging customers to
collect “Pepsi Points,” the company’s new loyalty rewards. At the end of the spot, a boy hopped into a fighter jet as the text on screen read “7,000,000 Pepsi Points.”
John Leonard, from Seattle, took the
ad at face value, collecting the 7 million points needed to redeem the aircraft. But when he contacted Pepsi, the company laughed him off . The dispute led to a yearslong lawsuit,
reports People magazine, and was the subject of a 2022 Netflix documentary, titled Pepsi, Where’s My Jet? In the end, a judge sided with Pepsi, citing that no reasonable person could have assumed the fighter jet was a real off er.
Now, 30 years later, Leonard has
gotten the last laugh — kind of. Frontier Airlines converted his 7 million Pepsi Points into 7 million Frontier miles — giving him free flights for life. “I’m an avid traveler,” said Leonard, now
in his 50s, with a wife and kids of his own. “It’s not cheap to travel with three kids.” He adds: “When I look back at that
original pitch, I couldn’t fly a jet. I couldn’t have maintained it. This is actually something that’s very doable.”
