detrimental effect on the young. There are calls for its access to be


limited. Australia has banned social media for people under 16. A dozen other countries are considering simi-


lar restrictions. In the U.S., the discussion over who


is responsible for controlling and limit- ing access has devolved into a chaotic debate. Parents, schools, tech compa- nies, and the government have failed to find a middle ground. A nationwide Newsmax/TIPP Poll asked about 1,500 Americans

25-44 and 45-64 age brackets support setting a minimum age requirement nationwide. The backing rises to 83% among


seniors but falls to 63% among those ages 18-24. Across income brackets, those in


favor of setting age restrictions for chil- dren garner support over 70%. Mean- while, Republicans are the most in favor of putting such checks in place, with 81% supporting the move; Demo- crats aren’t far behind, with 76% shar- ing the same views, and independents come in at 71%. Regarding the suggestion that


social media companies should be required to obtain parental consent before allowing children under 18 to create accounts, Americans are again clear: 76% support the move, only 14% oppose it, and 10% are unsure.
