because nothing can stop people from using illicit drugs. Therefore, it makes more sense to regulate drugs and get rid of the black market. Many parts of the country have legalized certain

drugs, marijuana in particular, yet in virtually every case the black market has increased, not decreased. In the mid-1990s, William F. Buckley Jr. and
others argued it was time to legalize all drugs, including cocaine and heroin. That idea was dumb then. It’s even dumber now. In 2019, lawmakers in Colorado made the
possession of a small amount of heroin and cocaine a misdemeanor, not a felony. The Democratic Party- controlled legislature included fentanyl, the most dangerous drug of them all. What happened? Opioid overdose deaths increased by 54% in 2020.

nited States Circuit Court Judge Stuart Kyle Duncan attempted to give a speech
at Stanford Law School, where he had been invited by the Federalist Society. A mob of obnoxious students shouted,
screamed, and hurled epithets at Duncan, preventing his talk. When he requested assistance from administrators who were present, Stanford’s Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Tirien Steinbach defended the students’ conduct (“I’m glad this is going on here.”) but suggested that Duncan was the problem, that his “abhorrent” views caused students to suppress free expression. Steinbach was referring to Duncan’s opinion
in United States v. Varner — a sex off ender with multiple convictions for possession of child pornography. After his federal conviction, Varner insisted that he was transgender and requested that his court records be changed to use his new name — Kathrine Nicole Jett — and female pronouns. The court said no. On appeal, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals (in an opinion written by Duncan) ruled that the federal courts had no statutory authority to entertain Varner’s motion. Oh, the outrage.

Greatest Rip-Off Ever? A
recent Associated Press story, based on the latest data on global carbon emissions, reported: “Carbon Dioxide
Emissions Reached a Record High in 2022.” When you spend $100 billion of taxpayer money and
achieve absolutely nothing, President Joe Biden and his green allies should be arrested for criminal fraud. Where did all the money go? Tens of billions of dollars have lined the pockets of left-wing environmental and social justice groups that have been emitting a lot of hot air but no results. Green energy companies have milked taxpayers of tens of billions more, even as wind and solar only produce about 12% of our energy.
Is this the greatest rip-off of U.S. taxpayers in history? SALLY PIPES

ov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., has learned fortunes can change quickly in the Golden State. Less than a year ago,
Newsom was celebrating a projected $100 billion budget surplus — a fiscal boon that prompted the governor and legislature to craft a budget exceeding $300 billion. Now, California faces a $22.5 billion deficit, leaving the
governor scrambling for ways to tighten the state’s monetary belt.
He can start by calling off his plan to expand California’s
Medicaid program, known as Medi-Cal, to all undocumented immigrants. The expansion was a bad idea when the state’s coff ers were
flush. Now that California is struggling to make ends meet, using taxpayer money to cover noncitizens is simply irresponsible.
