BOOKS 12 Miracles of Life

Napoleon Hill’s “Science of Success” revealed in never-before-published bestseller. ::

BY MARISA HERMAN F

ans of bestselling, self- help author Napoleon Hill will welcome the news that there is more to his famed

philosophy of success than was published in his landmark 1937 book Think and Grow Rich. Don Green, executive

director of the Napoleon Hill Foundation and leading expert on the late author’s works, has discovered the never- before-published The 12 Miracles of Life: The Science of Success, which Hill penned 75 years ago. It focuses on a dozen

part time as a newspaper reporter when he turned 15, and then writing biographical stories about successful people in magazines to help fund his dream of attending Georgetown University Law School. His legal ambitions were quickly abandoned when he learned of the prominent individuals he may have the chance of interviewing in his new role, including Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell. It was an interview with Andrew Carnegie in 1908 that upended Hill’s future. As the industrialist

shared stories of his successes, he proposed the concept of developing

in life,” Green said of Hill, whom he describes as a “pioneer in the study of the American philosophy of personal achievement.” To Hill, the 12 miracles include:

the power of faith, law of growth through change, growth through struggle, mastery of poverty, ways failure may be a blessing, and how the American way of life makes men free.

The chapters focus on following

Hill’s simple philosophy for success and provide a guide that helps set readers on a path for a better life. Green shares how Hill’s stepmother influenced him to help others by telling the very active child that he should put his imagination and drive to work by becoming a writer. Martha Hill reportedly purchased the impressionable 12-year-old his first typewriter. Hill took her advice, working

a new philosophy of individual achievement and challenged Hill to see it through. Green writes how Hill accepted

Carnegie’s offer, but had to do so under the conditions that he would dedicate 20 years to researching the causes of success and failure while maintaining a separate stream of income. Hill agreed to the terms and

set out to write the American philosophy of personal achievement while also making a living as a lecturer, educator, author, and adviser to two presidents. It took the 20 years that Carnegie

predicted before Hill published a 16-lesson course, the eight-volume set Law of Success, in 1928, which was distributed worldwide. Green’s favorite miracle is

the final one highlighted in the manuscript —that the American way of life makes men free. “One of the greatest miracles of all time is to grow up in this

country and be free to choose your own path,” he said. Part of choosing your own path,

according to Green, is finding your purpose. He invoked Hill’s “words of

wisdom” to explain: “‘A man without a definite major purpose is as helpless as a ship without a compass.’ “I read so many stories of so

many people knowing at an early age what they want to do,” he added. “Most people are wondering.” “Finding a purpose and

answering, ‘what are you going to do’?” is what Green contends leads you to the step of coming up with a plan. “What do you intend to give to

receive what you want?” Green said is what people finding their purpose and developing a plan should ask. While the book touches on many

themes, Green has one goal for readers. “If one person gets the book

and reads it and becomes a better person, then I am happy,” he said.
