Violent Illegals Seek Refuge in Sanctuary Cities

V

They hope Democrat mayors will resist Trump’s plan to deport them. BY MATTHEW LYSIAK

iolent illegal immi- grants, including members of the notorious Tren de Aragua gang, are migrating

to Chicago, Boston, and other liberal sanctuary cities to avoid deportation by the Trump administration. “They’ve been coming in steadi-

ly for years, but since the election, we have definitely seen an uptick,” a federal law enforcement source tells Newsmax. “When they hear Democrat mayors

warning the feds that any attempts to deport them will face resistance, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out what is going to happen next. “It’s absolutely demoralizing for local

law enforcement,” the source added. President Donald Trump and his

new border czar, Thomas D. Homan, have vowed to carry out the “largest deportation effort in American his- tory” of illegals with violent criminal records.

Homan said he plans to make Chi-

cago one of his first targets. Trump says deportations are an

issue of national security, telling NBC News that “when people have killed and murdered, when drug lords have destroyed countries, and now they’re going to go back to those countries because they’re not staying here.”

In response, mayors from the

nation’s largest cities have promised to resist federal efforts. After Trump won the presidential

election in November, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced that city officials would shield illegal immi- grants from federal agents, claiming Trump’s policies are discriminatory and would weaken the fabric of the town.

“His threat is not just towards new

arrivals and undocumented families. His threats are also against Black fam- ilies. We’re going to protect undocu- mented individuals . . . we’re going to protect Black folks, brown folks, Asian folks,” Johnson said. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker appeared

to escalate tensions further, telling reporters he would personally obstruct any efforts to deport residents of Chi- cago.

“To anyone who intends to come to

take away the freedom and opportu- nity and dignity of Illinoisans, I would remind you that a happy warrior is still a warrior,” Pritzker said. “You come for my people, you come through me.” In Boston, the city council unani-

mously approved a measure intended to obstruct Trump’s plans to deport any illegal immigrants. The Trust Act would protect illegal immigrants from “unjust enforcement actions” and

place restrictions on Boston police officers’ ability to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforce- ment (ICE). A further resolution adopted by the

council states that “proposals for mass deportations represent a direct attack on Boston’s immigrant families and threaten to tear communities apart.” Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, speak-

ing on Boston Public Radio’s Ask The Mayor show, said the act prevents local law enforcement from assisting in the deportations. “The Boston Trust Act puts strict prohibitions on local law enforcement from being pulled into becoming the enforcement arm for the whims of whatever the sort of approach of the federal immigration law might be,” Wu said.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom repeatedly said he wants to “Trump- proof” state laws to prevent the new administration from implementing its policies in California. “The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack — and we won’t sit idle,” Newsom said.
