HEART FAILURE: GLP-1 DRUGS REDUCE DEATH RISK GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic,

Air Pollution May Cause Heart Damage R
esearch published in Radiology indicated that fine
particulate matter in the air may contribute to diffuse myocardial fibrosis, a form of scarring in the heart muscle that may develop into heart failure. The study of healthy people and
patients with dilated cardiomyopathy found that higher long-term exposure to fine particulate air pollution was linked with higher levels of myocardial fibrosis in both the patients with cardiomyopathy and the controls, indicating that myocardial fibrosis may be a key mechanism by which air pollution contributes to cardiovascular disease. “Our study suggests that air
quality may play a significant role in changes to heart structure, potentially setting the stage for future cardiovascular disease,” said Kate Hanneman, M.D.
Wegovy, Victoza, and Mounjaro may reduce the risk of hospitalization and death among people with heart failure (HF). Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is the most common form of HF, especially among people with obesity and Type 2 diabetes. In a Mass General Brigham study of more than 90,000 HFpEF patients with obesity and Type 2 diabetes, those who took GLP-1 drugs substantially lowered their risk of hospitalization due to HF and all-cause mortality by more than 40% when compared with people who took sitagliptin, a diabetes drug.
AIR POLLUTION HARMING KIDS’ EYESIGHT Myopia or nearsightedness — when distant objects appear blurry — is becoming more common in children, and a study published in PNAS Nexus found that air pollution may be partly to blame. Researchers found that even low levels of air pollutants are associated with how well children can see without glasses. Polluted air can cause inflammation and stress in the eyes, reduce exposure to sunlight, which is important for healthy eye development, and trigger chemical changes in the eye that lead to it changing shape, causing myopia.
BACK PAIN: ACUPUNCTURE MOST EFFECTIVE A study funded by the National Institutes of Health found that adults age 65 and older with chronic lower back pain who were treated with acupuncture had a greater reduction in pain and a greater improvement in physical function than those who received usual medical care only, generally medications or physical therapy.
SKIN CANCER: VITAMIN B3 DERIVATIVE PREVENTIVE Nicotinamide, a vitamin B3
derivative sold over the counter, can help prevent skin cancer, according to a study published in JAMA Dermatology. Researchers analyzed records of 33,833 skin
cancer patients and found that those who took 500 milligrams of nicotinamide twice daily for longer than 30 days following their first diagnosis for skin cancer reduced their risk for a second basal cell or squamous cell cancer by 54%.
Air Pollution Linked to Lung Cancer
I
n a study published in Nature, researchers studied tumors from 871 never-smokers
and found that those living in more polluted environments had significantly more mutations in their tumors that directly encouraged the development of lung cancer. They discovered a 3.9-fold increase in mutations linked to smoking tobacco and a 76% increase in another mutational signature linked to aging. “Our research shows that air pollution is strongly associated with the same types of DNA mutations we typically associate with smoking,” said Ludmil Alexandrov, Ph.D.
