ummer heat in Central Florida is brutal. Did you know that dogs are
much more susceptible to heat stroke than humans? Dogs do not sweat on any part of the body that is covered in fur. They only have sweat glands on their cute little feet. They also count on panting to release excess heat. In an effort to keep your dog cool, do
NOT give them extremely cold water or ice cubes! This can cause severe muscle spasms that can result in bloat. Bloat is the second leading killer of dogs after cancer. A dog with a boating stomach has a short time to live without emergency veterinary intervention. Bloat can occur in two forms: gastric dilatation (swelling of the stomach from gas) or gastric dilatation with volvus (torsion which occurs when the stomach twists on its axis). Often both forms of bloat occur in a single episode with the second form quickly following the fi rst. When this happens, bloat can be fatal in minutes. Tragically, the majority of dog owners
have never heard of bloat. Normal (room temperature) water or cooling with cold towels on the inner thigh is the best way to cool a dog. And, when walking your best four-legged friends, stay off hot pavements and choose a cooler time of day. Let’s keep them safe and cool!
