which serves as an outlet to pay tribute to Miles Davis. The late jazz giant’s canon will be explored and reshaped with a band which also includes Aidan Thorne and Mark O’Connor, frequent bandmates of Williams’.

ROOTS ROUND UP July2023

The last couple of hundred years has seen a well-established and healthy exchange of musical ide- as between Britain and the US. British rock and pop owes a mas- sive debt to American blues and rock‘n’roll, and much of what is now known as Americana can be traced back to the music of emi- grants from these isles.

Devon-born

Charlotte Carrivick are one of the best examples of that crosscultural fertilisation. Their roots may lie in the folk music of southwestern England, but there’s also a strong

twins Laura and

thread of bluegrass woven through traditional covers and original songs based on local folklore. Ac- complished musicians with vocal harmonies to die for, the Carrivick Sisters are considered bright lights on the UK roots scene.

Also taking their cues from Brit- ish and American traditions are Welsh quartet Tapestri. A meeting of minds between two established singer-songwriters, Pembrokesh- ire-based Lowri Evans and north Wales’

Sarah Zyborska, their harmony-drenched songs in both English and Welsh have been win- ning them fans from across Brit- ain. Both bands will be perform- ing at the 2023 Welsh Folk Prom at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall on Mon 10 July.

Stryder the two days offer sterling value. Those acts headline the Friday and Saturday respectively, with Dodgy and Blazin’ Squad supporting, again respectively.

FLYSCREEN

Le Public Space, Newport, Sat 8 July Tickets: £5. Info: lepublicspace.co.uk. Coming on for 30 years ago, Newport spawned a glut of bands on a punk/indie/ grunge tip, and though few of them rose to wider prominence the scene is fondly remembered by oldheads. Flyscreen were one of those bands, even signed to a major label for all the good it did them, and from out of nowhere they’re back with a couple of gigs including this one.

INITIATE

The Cab, Newport, Mon 10 July Tickets: £12. Info: southwalescollective. bigcartel.com. Welsh debut for the headliners, an Orange County hardcore quintet with a cleancut demeanour and posi ethos, but the sort of earthmoving riffs one might expect from a band signed to the tastemaking Triple B label. Boston group Move, also signed to Triple B, are Initiate’s touring partners here.

LOVE WITH JOHNNY ECHOLS

Earl Haig Memorial Club, Cardiff, Wed 12 July Tickets: £20. Info: facebook.com/ earlhaigclub. That’s Love as in Forever Changes, 60s psychedelic cult band etc Love. Arthur Lee’s band Love, except he died in 2006, and so co-founding member Johnny Echols takes the lead role in his absence. Echols’ backing band also go by Baby Lemonade, a 90s outfit from LA who’ve been linked with Love on and off for some 30 years.

57 OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Rudry Parish Hall, Fri 14 + Sat 15 July Tickets: £52 weekend/£26 under-18s/£12 under-13s/free under-4s. Info: facebook. com/otbtfest. Folk, roots and country type shenanigans in the field of a parish hall near Caerphilly, Off The Beaten Track was formerly known as Rudry Music Festival but has continued in much the same vein. For 2023, highlights include Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman, Nick Harper, Hazel & Grey and Blind River Scare.

BELLE & SEBASTIAN Off The Beaten Track - Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman TEDDY SWIMS

Great Hall, Cardiff University Students Union, Thurs 13 July Tickets: £25. Info: cardiffstudents.com. Second Cardiff date in just over a year for this peculiarly-monikered alt/pop/r’n’b fellow from Atlanta, who cut his teeth and found an audience knocking out covers on YouTube. The solo musician, real name Jaten Dimsdale, has moved up a commercial level in the last 12 months, though relatively small-scale at present compared to his US profile.

HIGHWAY TO HELLFEST

The Patriot, Crumlin, Fri 14 + Sat 15 July Tickets: £35 both days. Info: home-of- rock.co.uk. Nothing to do with French rock festival Hellfest, this is in fact the quite mad gambit of two consecutive evening shows consisting entirely of AC/DC tribute bands, seven in total. The name of one – Burnt Out Wreck, who play on Fri 14 – might also describe how unwitting punters might feel by the end.

Belle & Sebastian COLOUR CLASH

Tredegar Park, Newport, Sat 15 July Tickets: £40/£80 VIP. Info: colour-clash. co.uk. Day of bouncing badboy/gal biz whose name references its origins as one of those things where everyone gets powder

Great Hall, Cardiff University Students Union, Sat 15 July Tickets: £32.50. Info: cardiffstudents. com. Third time a charm (hopefully) for the often musically charming (arguably) Belle & Sebastian, who’ve had to postpone this show twice thanks to lockdown and then in-band illness. The Scottish indie thought leaders, and their classic pop-inflected stylings, have had a dedicated fanbase for a good 20 years now, and they’ll have had to be patient in this instance.
