Shiny, Happy People: Duggar Family
Secrets Dirs. Julia Willoughby Nason, Olivia Crist (4 x 30-50 min episodes)
You might not have heard of the Duggar family in the UK, but you may well be aware of the myriad reality TV shows in the States they helped popularise. The stars of 19 Kids And Counting and other spinoffs, the Duggars are funda- mentalist Christians who follow the ‘Quiverfull’ practice of having as many, devout children as possible. However, what looks idyllic on TV is a veneer masking a deeply mi- sogynistic culture and sadly, child abuse. This docuseries shines a light not only into the Duggars’ darkest recesses but the problematic institution they quietly represent.

Following up a flawless first season, early reviews for The Bear Season 2 are thankfully looking much the same, according to the Tomatometer. Starring Jeremy Allen White as a hotshot chef returning to run his fam- ily’s Chicago sandwich shop, Season 1 left off with a kitchen fire and near-death experience. Finally facing the demons of his brother’s suicide, Allen’s Carmy barely holds a dysfunctional staff together to enforce a rebrand. Volatile, frenetic but always beautifully considered, this is television firing on all cylinders.

Good Omens, S2 Dir. Douglas Mackinnon
(6 x 51-58 min episodes)
The good ineffable ship ‘Aziracrow’ is sailing back to us this July. If your Tumblr slang is rusty, we’re of course talking about Michael Sheen’s angel Aziraphale and Da- vid Tennant’s demon Crowley in Good Omens, the TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s book of the same name. You’d think after averting the apocalypse and their own deaths, there’d be little left for the unlikely friends to do, but come Season 2, their duo is about to get a third wheel in the form of Jon Hamm’s archangel Gabriel, who seems to have a touch of the amnesias…

The Great, S3 Dir. Matthew Moore, Sharree Folkson, Jafar Mah-

One of the more underrated historical shows of recent years, The Great is a rambunctious recounting of the life of Russia’s Catherine The Great (Empress Catherine II), played by Elle Fanning, and her husband Peter III (Nicholas Hoult). Historical accuracy couldn’t be further from the point here, with creator Tony McNamara going for maximum fun over maximum facts. Following the Empress’s attempt to murder her husband at the climax of Season 2, Catherine and Peter’s marriage will be even more strained in Season 3. Plus, there’s a war between the Brits and Yanks brewing…

Another series that may have slipped under your radar, this being David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman’s ambi- tious adaptation of sci-fi master Isaac Asimov’s equally epic saga. Originally published as collected short stories that were later expanded, the premise lies in psychohis- tory, a way of predicting the future devised by Asimov, and practised by Jared Harris’ Hari Seldon in the TV series. Clones, mysticism, androids and the fate of the Galactic Empire are also in the mix, as well as a shirtless Lee Pace. Think Dune but less sandy.
